On Wings Like Eagles
May 01, 2024
"On Wings Like Eagles" was carved from a single piece of leather, just 1/8th to 3/16th of an inch thick. Each individual feather was cut out using a surgical scalpel, then textured with multiple fine cuts. The quill is finished with a bit of braided leather lace. The feather is mounted on a thin piece of cowhide, set in a frame I made from ambrosia maple.
While I was in the midst of cutting all those feathers, a dear friend lost his wife in a tragic accident. Her memorial service was a beautiful celebration of a life of faith — full of laughter and tears and stories that will stay with me.
It's the faith of that family that will carry them through. And it's that same faith that inspired the piece and its title.
"…but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." — Isaiah 40:31
If you're in the Raleigh area and have ever wanted to see my leather artwork in person, I have some good news: my piece, "On Wings Like Eagles," will be on display at the Cary Gallery of Artists throughout June, as part of a show featuring members of the Local Artists Forum I belong to.
The piece is one of about 20 works in the show, submitted by a group of painters, woodworkers, jewelers, and other artists who meet monthly to share work and offer each other honest feedback. It's one of the best creative communities I've been part of.
